This week’s show and tell theme is your idea of a super supper.   Students should bring a photo or drawing of their favorite supper (don’t forget dessert).    They should also be prepared to tell three or four sentence about their choice.   Students that do not have a photo/drawing will still be expected to participate on their assigned day.   Please read the April 30-May 4 schedule for show and tell dates, tests and other events pertaining to our class.

April 23-27 Schedule

Time is moving quickly now that we are in the last quarter of the year.   This week we enjoyed the warm spring weather with some extra recess time.   Our biggest highlight of the week came on Tuesday when we received our new reading rug.   It features a map of Canada and the students enjoy finding specific geographic locations during story time.   Below is a picture of our new reading rug.   On Thursday, we had some special visitors who presented some Dr. Seuss style skits.   The students enjoyed a few giggles as the seventh grade students shared their wacky rhymes with us.

Next week will be another five day week.   This week’s show and tell theme is your pet.    Please have your child bring a photo or drawing of their pet.    For those that do not have a pet, please have your child bring a photo/drawing of the pet he would choose given an opportunity.   Each child should be prepared to tell several sentences about their pet.   Please read the April 23-27 schedule for specific details pertaining to our class.

New this week:    In preparation for third grade, on a regular basis, the second grade students will be having reading comprehension quizzes periodically over their homework assignments.    Please take an extra couple of minutes to review the story with your child after he/she reads it to you.

Upcoming Dates to Remember:

Thursday, April 26 = Bake Sale

Friday, April 27 =  Spring Pictures, Hot Lunch option (hot dogs)

Friday, May 4 = No school (Professional Development)

April 16-20 Schedule

After a few short weeks, we are back to a regular five day week for April 16-20.   Please read the April 16-20 schedule for specific information pertaining to our class.

New this week, we will be having show and tell.   All students are expected to participate.   On my blog, I will let you know what the weekly theme is.   Please help your child to pick out something related to our theme to bring each week.   Students will be expected to tell several sentences about their object.   Should they forget to bring an object, they will still be telling in front of the class, but it may be more difficult to do.   If your child is absent on their assigned day, your child will participate the following day.

This week’s show and tell theme is family.   Bring photos or drawings of your family.  Be prepared to tell their names and something about them.

Homework will restart on Monday.   A reminder that our classroom procedure for reading homework is that each child should read the assigned pages twice to himself and once to an adult.   Upon completion of the homework, an adult should sign the child’s agenda.  If homework was not completed, please leave me a quick note explaining that fact.   Agendas should be signed nightly, even on “no homework” nights to ensure proper communication between the home and school.   Thanks for your help in this matter.

Please remember to check the weather each morning and choose appropriate clothing for your child.   We will go outside most days, so raincoats and boots are vital.    Many of the children have wet socks after one recess, please send spare pairs to school.

Also, if you have not sent a complete change of clothes with your child, please do so on Monday.   It is very convenient for your child to change quickly and return to class, saving you a trip to school, if an accident occurs.   Thanks for your help.

Report Cards for Third Quarter

Today is report card day.   Your child has their report card safely in the conversation pocket of their agenda.   The report card is yours to keep.   Please sign and return the bright orange communication form in the envelope at your earliest convenience.

Parent/teacher interviews are Thursday evening from 6-9pm or Friday morning from 10am-12pm. Remember, if you would like a parent/teacher interview appointment, please sign the list in the office or contact Miss Fanning and she will help you pick a time convenient for you.

As we work towards the end of this year and anticipate a new year beginning (have you pre-registered in the office?), one thing the second grade students look forward to is joining the Knight Lights percussion ensemble.   This year’s group of Grace Christian School Knight Lights has entered a Long and McQuade YouTube contest for $5,000 towards our music education program.   What a wonderful opportunity  these children have been given to learn from our talented Mrs. Devries.

Please watch their video and like or comment to show your support!

April 9-13 Schedule

After enjoying a four day long Easter weekend, the students are back to school for three days.   This week, we will be finishing our standarized tests on Wednesday, April 11.

Remember that the best way to prepare for these tests is to have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast.   We will be starting testing at 9am, so please continue to have your child at school promptly.   When your child is not taking the standardized tests with me, he will be playing quietly in the fellowship hall under the supervision of our student teacher, Miss Grant.   The students are encouraged to bring a small indoor toy (non-electronic) to share with their friends during this free time.

Also this week, after months of preparation, the high school drama team is presenting The Ransom of Miss Elverna Dower on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 at 7pm.   Tickets are available from Mr. Thompson ($8 in advance) or $10 at the store.   There will also be desserts by donation at intermission.   The proceeds from this production will be used to support our Jamaica Missions Team.

Please read the April 9-13 schedule for all the specific details pertaining to our class.
