January 28 – February 1 Schedule

A bone chilling, long week has ended.   Thank you for helping your child pick out one small toy to share at school.   Indoor recesses went smoothly because of the variety of toys.   Please be aware that depending on how quickly or slowly the temperature moderates, we may have another day of indoor recess on Monday.

15-minutes-of-fun[1]If you are looking for a warm activity to do with your family this weekend, Confederation Centre Library is hosting a free Family Literacy Day event on Saturday from 12pm-3pm.  If you would prefer to stay home, ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging Canadian families to have “15 Minutes of Fun” learning together.   Learning can happen at any time.   Practicing literacy together for just 15 minutes a day has tremendous benefits for both children and parents.   Here’s a link for some fun and free activites the whole family can enjoy together: http://abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/15-minutes-of-fun

Next week is a fun-filled five day week for our class.   On Monday, January 28, we will having our Fairy Tale i120323circus[1]Adventure.   The children are excited to come dressed up as a fairy tale character and are looking forward to playing “Guess that Fairy Tale”, from the eleven lunch bags waiting for us on the ledge.   I have a number of other events planned and I look forward to seeing your children grow and learn in a different way.

On Tuesday, January 29, our class will be going on a field trip to the Confederation Centre Children’s Library.   This will give us an opportunity to enjoy some different books and other activities.    While at the library, the students will be receiving a free copy of I’ve Lost My Cat.   If your child has his/her own library card and you would like him/her to use it, please let me know how many books you would like brought home.   It would be helpful if library cards were placed in the conversation pocket of your child’s agenda for Tuesday morning.

Here is our weekly schedule of events and tests: January 28-February 1

General Information + Fairy Tale Adventure Day

1. Cold weather alert: Please continue to allow your child to bring one small toy for indoor recess.   Remember this should be a toy he/she is willing to share.   This makes indoor recess fun for the students and the time passes more quickly for their teacher.

2. Suggestion to beat the indoor winter woes:  Mathletics    (www.mathletics.ca , user names and passwords are stapled inside the cover of your child’s agenda).    There are many different things to do including: core activities, Live Mathletics, and games.   Live Mathletics is a fun and exciting way to practice math facts.

Three-Little-Pigs-3[1]3. Fairy Tale Adventure Day is fast approaching (Monday, January 28).   On Monday, students have been encouraged to dress up as a favorite fairy tale character.   I am looking to borrow any fairy tale books that you might have at home.   If you have any books you could loan me, please label them with your child’s name and send them in at your earliest convenience.   This will help me tremendously.

4. Guess That Fairy Tale Project: in the pocket of your child’s agenda, please find a paper bag and instructions on how to complete this project.   Here’s a copy of the instructions: Guess That Fairy Tale.   Completed projects are due by Friday, January 25.   Please contact me if you have any questions.

January 21-25 Schedule

Family_Circus[1]Thanks for helping your child pick a toy he/she was willing to share with their friends.   It made indoor recess much easier on Friday.   As I look ahead to the forecast for next week, I suspect we might have a few more indoor recesses.   If I know in advance, I will post a reminder our our classroom blog.

Next week, we will be having show and tell on Tuesday afternoon.   This week’s theme is your favorite storybook.  All students are expected to particpate.   Each student should be prepared to tell, in their own words, three or four sentences summarizing the story.   Please help your child pick out a story and practice what he/she would like to say.   Then, have your child pack the book in his/her backpack.   Should they forget to bring their favorite storybook, they will still be telling in front of the class, but it may be more difficult to do so.

Hockey Sweater Day

hnic-logo[1]In honour of the return of the NHL, student council has decided to host hockey sweater day this Friday, January 18.   Students are invited to wear  hockey sweaters, hockey t-shirts or sweatshirts in honour of their favorite team.

Also, please have your child pack one small toy for indoor recess.   This should not be an electronic device and it should be something that your child would not mind sharing with his/her classmates.  With the predicted cold weather tomorrow, we might be inside during recess time and a few toys will help play time go more smoothly.   Thanks for your help.

January 14-18 Schedule

Argus-Learning-Its-Not-Homework-Poster-N15428_XL[1]We have finished our first full week of school in 2013.   I trust that everyone is settling back into their routine nicely.   Next week is another full five day week of school.  Please check the weekly January 14-18 schedule for events and tests that pertain to our class.

Now that winter weather is upon us please remember that GCS follows the Department of Euducation’s school canellation procedures.   As the the Deptartment of Education amalgamates their East/West school boards into one this month, their terminology for cancelling school has changed.    A province-wide cancellation/delay is now being called under the term “English Language Schools“; occassionally, the term “Eastern School District” may still be used.   If “English Language Schools” are delayed/closed for the day, then GCS will also be delayed/closed for the day. If schools are being delayed/closed by “families”, GCS will follow the families of Colonel Gray, Charlottetown Rural or Bluefield.   If any one of these school families is delayed/cancelled then GCS will be delayed cancelled for the day.

Detailed announcements regarding delays/cancellations or early closures will be broadcast on local radio stations throughout the day.  Local radio stations that broadcast school closures include: Ocean 100.3 FM, CFCY 95.1 FM, Magic 93 FM or CBC 96.1 FM.   Please listen to the radio or check on line for the most current closures.

January 7-11 Schedule

welcome-back_to_school[1]

Welcome to 2013!  I trust that everyone had a lovely Christmas.   Thank you for the many beautiful and thoughtful gifts.

As a new calendar year starts, I look forward to spending more time with the students .   Over the next six months, as we play, learn and grow together, the children will continue to develop academically, spiritually, socially, physically and emotionally.   As an educator, it is always rewarding to see their progress.

This week, we will be having Christmas show and tell on Tuesday afternoon.   All students are expected to participate.   Students are encouraged to bring one favorite gift he/she received for Christmas.   Please help your child to pick out one item and pack it in their backpack.   Students will be expected to tell several sentences about their gift.   Should they forget to bring their favorite gift, they will still be telling in front of the class, but it may be more difficult to do.

k1651068[1]Now that the winter weather is upon us, please make sure that your child is properly dressd for outdoor recesses.   I find it helpful if each child comes to school with two pairs of mitts/gloves each day.   We do not have any way of drying mitts/gloves and a dry second pair is always welcome when we go outside for our second recess.   Also, I have noticed that many of the children have used their spare change of clothes and a replacement set has not come to school.   Please take a few minutes some time this week to check your child’s set of clothing at school to ensure that it has a shirt, pants, underwear, and two pairs of socks.   It is very convenient to simply have a child change quickly and return to class warm and dry (it is hard to concentrate when you have wet socks, pants, etc.).
