October 27th -31st

Hello Parents,

What a great week we had last week with Science and Technology week.  Students took part in science learning stations led by the high school students.  On Thursday students created posters for a poster contest for a chance to see Chris Hadfield.  On Friday we finished off the week by having students dress up like a scientist and in science class grade one and two made their own thermometers.   Grade Three and Four made lemonade on Friday and they popped over to share some. Here are a few pictures from the week:

This week is a very short week as there is No School on Thursday October 30th and Friday, October 31st  for the students.  Teacher will be attending the annual ACSI conference those days.

Because it is such a short week there will be no testing this week.  Students will be assigned the next spelling list for homework(List # 4 for gr. 1 and List # 6 for Gr. 2)  but will not be tested until Thursday Nov. 6th.

Fall Party:

On Wednesday afternoon we will be travelling to the Laird farm for our Fall party.  A permission slip was sent home in your child’s agenda last week. Please make sure the slip is returned by Tuesday.  Please let me know if you are able to drive for this trip.

Enjoy your week,

Mrs. Barton

During the week of October 20th -24th, students will participate in collaborative learning stations, working alongside students and teachers from Kindergarten through Grade 12.  While some students participate in an in-school car building project with Lego, other students will explore kitchen chemistry and prepare delicious cupcakes; one for each student and each element on the period table.

On Friday Students in elementary will also participate in a “Dress like a Scientist” contest at the end of the week, after discussing the many science-related careers.   Students are to dress up as anyone who uses science everyday.

October 6th – 10th

Hello Parents,

We have a busy week coming up this week.

Grade one spelling starts this week:

Grade one will have their first spelling list this week.  The lists are in their homework folder they have been taking home to study their math facts.  Each night students should write out their list three times in the notebook that will be provided for them.   There is a sample in the front of their homework folder to demonstrate how I would like the lists written.  Students should take their homework folder and spelling notebooks to school each day so the homework can be tracked.  A small part of the grade one phonics grade is given for homework.  The test for list one will be on Friday.

This week’s tests for grades one and two:

Penmanship test– Wednesday Oct. 8th

Math test — Thursday Oct. 9th

Spelling test — Friday Oct. 10th

I Love my Bible class

Mrs. McGonnell is teaching out Bible class this year.  Tomorrow,  October 6th she is asking all grade one and two students to bring their Bibles to school.  The theme for Monday’s class will be I Love My Bible.

International Dinner

We are looking forward to our International Potluck Dinner on Monday October 6th at 5:30pm.  Every grade is invited to come with a favorite family dish of food to share with others.  We will be gathering in the gym of our school to share our cultural delights! Please let us know if you are planning on attending.

World Vision Coin Drive

October 6th – 10th is our World Vision Coin Drive.  This is an opportunity for students to raise money for a great cause.  Our very own Mrs. Thorne created this fund raiser when she was in high school here at Grace.  Over that last 10 years students continued to support this great cause.  Mrs. Thorne will be speaking with the elementary students on Tuesday about why she started this fundraiser and the impact it has made over the years.

School Pictures

School photos will be taken this Thursday Oct. 9th.

Coupon Booklets

Students are asked to return their sale forms and money on October 8 or 9. Coupon booklets will be sent home on Tuesday, October 14.

A few house keeping items

Hello Parents,

Just wanted to send out a note about a few things.

I Love my Bible class

Mrs. McGonnell is teaching out Bible class this year.  On Monday October 6th she is asking all grade one and two students to bring their Bibles to school.  The theme for Monday’s class will be I Love My Bible. The students are really enjoying Bible class with Mrs McGonnell.

Extra Clothes

Students brought a change of clothes the first of the school year, however I have noticed that some students have shorts for their change.  The weather is getting a little chilly for students to be wearing shorts.  If your child has shorts in their extra clothes please send in some long pants.   Also, if your child has to change their clothes during the day please make sure a set of clothes is sent in so your child always has a change.

Sending in Money

When sending in money on Wednesdays I would ask the orders be sent in in separate envelopes for each order with the exact change for each order.  For example Subway should be put in a separate envelope than hot dog money. Each envelope should be labelled with your child’s name and the amount and purpose of the money.  We don’t often to have change and it is time consuming if we have to make change when orders are combined.    Thank you for your understanding.

Enjoy the rest of your week!
