March 30th – April 2nd

Hello Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed the sunshine the last couple of days.  It’s great to see some of that snow melting away in the sun.  Praying that we don’t miss any more time this year.   I am very proud of my students for how well they settled back  into the routine of the classroom last week after such a long break.  Grade one and two have been really working hard during our class time. You should be proud of your child!

On Thursday we welcomed Jasmine to our class!  Jasmine was with us on Thursday and Friday and has settled in well to the routines of our class. Jasmine is in grade one and will be working through our ESL program with Mrs. Huizing.   Please encourage your child to continue to make her feel welcome in our class and at GCS.

This week’s tests:

Tuesday March 31st — Phonics Test

Wednesday April 1st – Math test

Thursday April 2nd — Spelling Test.    (List # 16 grade one, List # 19 Grade two)

Please ensure that students are completing their spelling homework each night.  Spelling words should be written in their blue spelling scribbler each night with the date written on the top of the page. If your child chooses to practice their spelling words in another way, please record in your child’s scribbler the way they practised them, along with your signature.  Spelling scribblers should be passed into the bins on top of the microwave each morning so I can check them.

Here is some information about the Bricks 4 Kidz March break camp as well as summer camps.

Bricks 4 Kidz Lego Camps:

Earlier this year, several elementary students embraced the opportunity to participate in Bricks 4 Kidz camps.  Check out these following updates:

Our camps are high-energy, fast paced settings where kids explore the world of engineering, architecture and mechanics using LEGO® Bricks. Our camp themes and activities are specifically designed for children ages 5 -12. All camp materials are supplied, and in some cases, allow students access to specialized and hard to find LEGO® products and software they might not otherwise be exposed to. In addition to our proprietary motorized model builds, all of our camps include creative free play time with our giant bags of LEGO® Bricks, LEGO-based games and challenges and other small daily take-homes.

Registration for March Break & Summer Camps are beginning soon, with some pretty incredible opportunities.  For more information, visit:

Coming up this week:

100th day of school:

On Thursday afternoon grade one and two, along with kindergarten will celebrate the 10oth day of school.  From 1:30 – 2:30 students will take part in learning centers all about the number 100. 🙂

Wednesday Skating:

We will be travelling by bus to Simmons arena again this week.   We strongly encourage parents who are available, and would enjoy a skate themselves, to pick their child up at the school by 1:10 PM and travel to the arena.  We are hopeful this will reduce the amount of parents feeling obligated to take time off to assist us with drives.  As always, we greatly appreciate the support of so many parents.  Students will conclude skating at 2:30 to allow time to untie skates and prepare for the trip back to the school via the bus.  Parents who wish to pick their child up at the rink must do so before 2:50, however the bus will be available to return students to school for 3:00.  Any students who are not picked up before 2:50 will return to the school for pick-up.   Please keep in mind that all students must wear mittens and a CSA approved helmet.

This week’s tests

Wednesday — Math test

Thursday — Phonics test

Friday — Spelling test — List # 14 for grade one, List # 17 for grade two.

Here are a few pictures from last week’s science class with Mrs. MacNeill.  Students had to build a structure that bears weight.  I was impressed with their work!
